Unmoored - Journey to Lent 2022

Beloved Epworth Community,

Several weeks ago, I sat around a virtual table with our worship vision team discerning a theme for this Lenten season. The word “Unmoored” emanated organically out of the sense each of us had of becoming disconnected from docks and anchors, adrift and searching for new bearings. Two years into this pandemic, we find ourselves in deep and often still unfamiliar waters.

What does our faith have to say about this? What new groundings or freedoms are present on these seas?

Throughout these next 40-some days, we’ll journey together in many ways. Worship, through scripture and song, shows what Jesus did with rough waters and how our ancestors in faith handled unmooring. Small groups for learning, growing and knowing are forming now, and can be a new kind of anchor. And, I hope you’ll be a part of the special services of this season, beginning with Ash Wednesday, on March 2nd, and ending with two powerful observances on Good Friday—the social justice stations of the cross which has become a new tradition at Epworth, and the seven last words of Christ service which we’ll participate in with our sister church, Easter Hill UMC in Richmond. You can find the complete details and sign-up forms on our website at www.epworthberkeley.org/lent

All of this leads us to the new freedom in Christ’s resurrection on Easter; to be unmoored is also to be unbound. In the deep waters, we find not necessarily certainty, but faith.

May you observe a holy Lent. God says, "Come." There are gifts in our unmooring.

With you,

Pastor Kristin
