Nicaragua Partnership

Epworth has established an ongoing relationship with the Ruben Dario Secondary School in Nueva Guinea, Nicaragua. Contact Lloyd Elliot (lloydel@berkeley.edu) if you are interested in joining or supporting the next Volunteer in Mission team or can assist with donations of reference materials, laboratory equipment, sports equipment, audio-video equipment and musical instruments.

Summer Trip to Nueva Guinea, Nicaragua
(and an optional tour of the San Juan River and Biological Reserve)

We are now making plans for our summer trip to Nueva Guinea to further Epworth’s relationship of love and support with Rubén Darío High School.  The trip to Nueva Guinea will be July 10 to July 23 and the Rio San Juan trip July 23 to July 30.

Everyone who has traveled on previous visits has come to love Nueva Guinea and to deeply appreciate the work being done at the high school.  Our friends there are looking forward to our return.

An exciting change this trip is that we are being invited to stay with families in their homes.  Ceira has suggested this as the right next step for the ongoing relationship between Epworth and Nueva Guinea.   It will give us greater opportunity to experience daily life and to make closer friends.  It also gives their community a way to care for us.  Some logistical issues remain and it may not be appropriate for all of us—staying in the hotel stay will still be an option.

A second opportunity this trip is a chance to tour the beautiful San Juan river with Ceira’s husband Marvin as our guide.  Marvin works as an environmental forester in the Indio Maiz Biological Reserve and he has wanted show us the area for some time.  He also wants us to get to know the Rama Indians who are his friends there.  We will drive to San Carlos at the outlet of Lake Nicaragua, and take a small boat down the river to San Juan del Norte at the mouth of the river.   From there we will explore the region.  Expect this trip to be very scenic and interesting.

The Nueva Guinea trip will be $900 plus airfare and the Rio San Juan tour will be an additional $500.
